We focus our service-learning projects on causes that are important to kids, to our board members, and to our community. When kids were asked, many mentioned that they want to help animals. So, we organized a project to called, My Super Power is Comforting Dogs.
For this project, the kids made no-sew blankets for dogs waiting to be adopted. We used fleece printed with cute patterns that was generously donated to use by members of the community. We donated over 25 blankets to Oswego-based, Rescued Rascals.
Because our projects are “service-learning” projects, there was an education component to the event. Dog expert, Lynn Stacy-Smith, lead a discussion with the kids about how dogs end up in shelters and how the blankets can help provide comfort during a time that is very scary for the dogs.
Rescued Rascals brought to the event a pup named Honey. They ended up with after she was abandoned in a field. The kids enjoyed petting Honey.
After making the blankets, the kids wrote notes to the pups who will receive the blanket they made. This not only added another educational and fun component to the process, along with the blankets, the notes also provide special gifts that Rescued Rascals will give to families who adopt dogs.
We are grateful to all of the kids, their parents and grandparents, Lynn Stacy-Smith, Rescued Rascals, Heritage Harley, and for members of the community who donated fleece and scissors. Your participate was critical to the success of his project.
